The Fullness of Time

My daughter Cara is soon to give birth. A Christmas baby! Our second Christmas baby. Our youngest daughter Emily was born on Christmas day 23 years ago. Now, in 2009, a second Christmas baby, our fourth grandbaby, will very soon grace our lives. And wow are we ready. More than ready! Cheryl is already in Virginia waiting for the arrival. The baby’s room is prepared, the crib in place, and every possible need supplied. The moment she arrives, those of us here in Ohio will jump in our cars, all gassed up, and caravan to Virginia for the celebration. Anticipation is high. Christmas blessings.

I have been considering the Christmas story a lot lately. Thinking about what Paul said. “When the time had fully come, God sent his Son, born under the law, to redeem those under the law, that we might receive the full rights as sons (and daughters).” Jesus came at just the right time. Certainly it did not feel that way to Mary and Joseph. All that “long journey, donkey ride, no room in the inn, smelling birthing room, angry king stuff” probably made them wonder. But, in the economy of God, it was “the fullness of time.” Not a moment early or a second late. Jesus came right on time.

I’m not sure when, but sometime in the past I wrote in the margin by the text, “Lord, teach me patience – to wait upon you in all matters – to wait for the fullness of time.” That prayer is still quite necessary in my life. I grow so anxious, so impatient. In truth, so untrusting. Christmas. A reminder that God, who was perfectly on time in the largest matter of our lives, redemption, will not fail. In the fullness of time, he will be there.

It’s December 14th. I wonder if our new grandbaby will arrive today. I hope so. I can’t wait! Oops! There I go again. Help me Jesus! I get so excited. After all, its Christmas.
