Say Yes!

I recently had the opportunity to speak to a group of people about the Holy Spirit, and chose as my text Luke 9: 1-6. It is the story of Jesus calling the Twelve together and giving them power and authority to preach the good news of the kingdom, heal the sick, and cast out demons.

The Twelve had not been with Jesus all that long before he gave them this power and authority. Certainly they had not become spiritual superstars who had reached the mountain top of maturity and competency. They had issues. Among them were a couple hot heads, a man who sold out to the Romans to make money on his own people, another who was a Jewish zealot who wanted to slit the throat of every person who ever sold out to the Romans. There were also several men who would end up running away when Jesus needed them most, a future betrayer, a deny-er, and a doubter.

Yet, Jesus took a risk on them and gave them power and authority. Why? Because he loved them, loved the world, and knew that as long as they stayed in relationship with him, they would grow and learn to exercise this power and authority in a kingdom advancing way.

Here is the bottom line. Every day we need to say yes to the Holy Spirit’s presence and power in our lives and step forward whenever the opportunity arises to tell people about Jesus, pray for the sick, and stand against evil. We do not need to wait until we meet some indefinable level of maturity and holiness. That will come as we stay the course. But, connected to one another, we need to do as they did. We might just find that what happened to them may in fact happen to us: people where healed everywhere.
