Great Pressure Means Great Power

I have a recommendation. If you are not already familiar with the devotional classic, “Streams in the Desert, I encourage you to purchase one and begin to included it in your time with the Lord. It has been consistently used of the Lord in my life, evidenced by the dog-earned, marked up copy that has been a devotional companion for over two decades. I came across Streams in the Desert early on my journey through the dark night. It seemed that every entry was not only written for me, but placed on the reading schedule on the very day I needed that specific word most.
Streams in the Desert was written by Mrs. Charles Cowman. She and he husband were missionaries to Japan and China in the early years of the 20th Century. During a difficult season of her life, particularly the six years she nursed her husband as he was dying, Mrs. Cowman collected thoughts, spiritual inspirations, poems, and hymns, to encourage and sustain them in the Lord. It is clear by reading what she collected that the devotional material was forged in suffering and trial, and has had the anointing of God’s sustaining grace upon it for nearly almost 100 years.
She wrote:
In the pathway of faith we come to learn that the Lord’s thoughts are not our thoughts, nor his ways our ways. Both in the physical and spiritual realm, great pressure means great power! Although circumstances may bring is into the place of death, that need not spell disaster – for if we trust in the Lord and wait patiently, that simply provides the occasion for the display of his almighty power. “Remember his marvelous works that he has done, his wonders and the judgments of his mouth (Psalm 105:5).
“ . . . In the wilderness shall waters break out, and streams in the desert.” (Isaiah 35:6)
