What Brings Us Together

By Terry Wardle

What is it that causes us to focus on what separates us, rather than what unites us? I’m not sure, but there certainly are many possibilities aren’t there. Competition. Arrogance. Judgments. Fear. Pride. Prejudice. Immaturity. Unforgiveness. Just plain nastiness. Nothing good in that list is there?

In Ephesians 4 Paul wants us to concentrate, even in the midst of our differences, on what actually unites us, what we all share in common as the people of God.

We are one body.

We all have the same Spirit

We have all been called to the same glorious future.

There is only one Lord.

One Faith.

One Baptism.

There is only one God and Father who is over us all.

In us all.

Living through us all.

It might serve us well, the next time we start down the road of doing judging one another because of some differences, to remember this list, to focus instead on all the wonderful ways in which we are united … and that it took the cross of Christ to make us that way. No small price for unity I’d say.
