Like Him

By Terry Wardle

God's people must become increasingly consumed with Jesus Christ. Through Him we have every spiritual blessing necessary for life and godliness. This includes not only such benefits as forgiveness of sin, adoption into God's family, reconciliation with the Father and life everlasting, but the strength to walk through the trials and difficulties of life. To be overcomes, we must daily "put on Christ" (Galatians 3:27, KJV) as God's provision for our past, present and future needs.

Jesus Christ is not only the means by which we gain victory in life. He is, in fact, the very "end" or goal of life itself. Paul tells us we were chosen before time to be conformed to the image of Christ: "For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of His Son" (Romans 8:29).

Paul is emphasizing that every circumstance we face with Christ forms us to be like Him. As Jesus shows us the way through life, He transforms us to be increasingly like Him in character and behavior. Everything-absolutely everything-about the Christian liferests on Jesus. Is it any wonder that Hebrews 12:2 instructs Christians to fix their gaze on Him?

Every eye, and the mind of every believer, must focus continually on the Lord. Such singleness of thought and vision is the necessity and privilege of us all.
